Art Therapy
Art therapy is the use of art materials and the creative process in a therapeutic mode to bring insight, growth, healing and ignite change. The focus is on the process, not a finished art product, and therefore anyone can participate. Often more profound insights and shifts can be experienced through the creative process in an art therapy session than in comparison to talk therapy, which locks the participant into the cognitive realm; often negating the sensual, kinaesthetic, and unconscious languages of the body.
Art therapy can be playful, insightful and relaxing. It creates an opportunity to experience flow and engages curiosity; empowering change through subtle action. What can develop through engaging in a therapeutic art process is an intrinsic deepening of our awareness of self and thereby others, to enrich our lives with clearer purpose and joy.
The use of art to express one self, one’s culture and one’s experiences is ancient and intuitively lives within us all.
art therapy is about the PROCESS and engagement with materials, not creating a masterful artwork
